Just 30 seconds into the buoyant “Motivation” video, Normani does Beyoncé’s iconic “Crazy In Love” opener to reveal a gorgeous royal blue eye lewk. While the scene itself paid tribute to the early 2000s Beyoncé video, Normani subtly paid tribute to another 2000s icon: Aaliyah. According to celebrity makeup artist Grace Pae, Normani’s blue look was inspired by a similar look the late singer wore in her 2001 “Rock The Boat” music video with a “modernized” twist to it.
To achieve the look, Pae prepped ‘Mani’s face with Tatcha’s Silk Canvas Protective Primer, then cocktailed two Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Foundations (shades 410 and 420) to create a flawless base. For the eyes, Pae created a base with Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Liquid Lipstick Paint before dusting on “Evil Genie” from Fenty Beauty’s Moroccan Spice Eyeshadow in inner corners. Then, she placed Nars’ Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Cressida on the outer corners of the eye. Normani’s shimmery blue lids were topped off with Stila Cosmetics’ Smudgestick Waterproof Eyeliner Vivid in Sapphire, Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow in Vivid Sapphire and Shade Mystere Liquid Eyeshadow in Psychic. Pae added MAC lashes and Fenty Beauty eyeliner to punctuate the look.
Elsewhere in the music video, Mani changed into a white two-piece graffiti set with a half-up-half-down updo and a soft pink makeup look.
Pae softened Normani’s eyes by wiping a gold shimmery eyeshadow from Pat McGrath’s Mothership V: Bronze Seduction Palette across the eyes and added an extra oomph with the Fenty Beauty Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil in How Many Carats?! Normani’s lips were lined with MAC’s Costa Riche Liner before Pae used her fingers to lightly dab on Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint in Unbuttoned and Unveil. To seal the deal, Pae used the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in FU$Y.
